From tragedy to triumph: my story🌅
When I was 17, everything changed in an instant. I was in a car accident caused by a drunk driver and became paralyzed from the belly button down. Dance had been my world since I was three, I started competing at five and dreamed of moving to LA to dance professionally. Suddenly, I was faced with the question: How could I be a dancer if I couldn’t use my legs? The physical pain was hard, but the emotional pain of losing my dream was even harder. Still, I discovered a strength I didn’t know I had. I couldn’t change what happened, but I could choose how to move forward, and I promised myself I’d find a way to turn this experience into something meaningful.
Building Rollettes: more than a dance team💃
Rollettes began as a way to connect with other girls who, like me, were searching for community, confidence, and a sense of belonging after life-altering injuries or diagnoses. What started as a small group in 2012 has grown into a movement. Rollettes is now a vibrant, for-profit business and global brand dedicated to empowering women and children with disabilities through dance, education, and advocacy. We focus on shattering stereotypes, providing representation, and showing the world that disability does not mean inability.
Over the years, we’ve expanded our reach beyond dance, creating online content, advocacy campaigns, and educational resources. Our goal is to make sure that every girl and woman with a disability knows she is seen, valued, and capable of achieving her dreams, on and off the dance floor.
The Rollettes Foundation: expanding our impact 🌍
The Rollettes Foundation, our nonprofit organization, proudly hosts the Rollettes Experience, an annual event that brings together hundreds of women and children with disabilities from around the world. This weekend is filled with dance classes, workshops, panels, and opportunities for genuine connection. The energy and sisterhood at the Rollettes Experience inspire us every year, and we are always looking to grow the event so we can welcome even more participants and expand our impact.
But our work doesn’t stop there. The Foundation works year-round to break down barriers for our community. We offer scholarships to help individuals attend our events, provide virtual mentorship programs, and run ongoing dance classes, all designed to help women and teens with disabilities build confidence, find their voice, and pursue their dreams. We know that sometimes the biggest barrier is access, so we’re committed to making our programs as inclusive as possible.
One of our most celebrated programs is the Boundless Talent Showcase, an inclusive competition where people of all ages, genders, and disabilities can take the stage, share their unique gifts, and support one another. Watching participants light up on stage, cheering each other on, is a powerful reminder that disability doesn’t limit talent or ambition. Every new friendship, breakthrough, and moment of courage reminds me that we’re building more than just an organization, we’re creating a movement and a true community where everyone belongs.
Lessons learned: what others can take away
1. Your story is your power 🗣️
Adversity can be a launching pad for impact. Don’t hide your story; share it. It’s what connects you to others and inspires change.
2. Build community, not just a business 🤝
The real magic happens when people feel seen and supported. Whether you’re running a for-profit or a non-profit, focus on the people you serve and the community you’re building.
3. Don’t let barriers define you 🦾
Obstacles are inevitable, but they don’t have to be the end of your story. Use them as stepping stones. Surround yourself with people who believe in your mission and are willing to help you break down walls.
4. Invest in partners who share your vision 🌱
Collaborating with the right partners will help you grow and protect what you’re building. Our partners have allowed us to manage risk, dream bigger, and serve our community with confidence.
Seeing someone who looks like you, lives like you, or faces similar challenges is powerful. Be that representation for someone else, and advocate for it in your industry.
Moving forward: an invitation 💌
The journey from tragedy to triumph is never a straight line, but it is worth it. Rollettes and the Rollettes Foundation exist to show what’s possible when you embrace your story, build community, and refuse to let obstacles define your future. My hope is that our work inspires others to turn their own challenges into opportunities for impact.
If you’re reading this and wondering how to start, remember: you are not alone, and your story matters. Find your community, invest in the right partners, and never underestimate the power of turning adversity into empowerment.
