Social media has affected businesses in many ways, but one of the things it has truly brought to the forefront is just how short the consumer’s attention span can be. Do you remember Grumpy Cat? What about the Mannequin Challenge? These were everywhere on social media a few years ago but have largely disappeared. But for those who used them well, success often followed.

Here’s what you need to know about jumping on the latest social media trends.
💅 Be very demure
While it’s tempting to try to stand out from the crowd by going over the top with new trends, sometimes less is more. You can certainly post on all your platforms, but repeated posts on the same subject or using the same content can backfire. Tread lightly at first and then ramp up if you get good results.
👩💻 Be very mindful
Keep your ear close to the ground as far as what your potential customers are watching and listening to. Know which social media platforms they are on, but even more importantly, which accounts they follow. And once you hear of a new trend, creator, or sound, jump on it. Getting in early is critical to your success.
As important as jumping in early is, however, making the trend your own is equally important. Don’t just copy the original content – instead, make it relevant to your product or service. And pay attention to any copyrighted content – you can’t post anything you don’t have the rights to.
🎀 Be very cutesy
Humor goes a long way on social media, and it can be a great way to get a lot of engagement. Just make sure it’s not offensive and doesn’t show your brand or your customers in a bad light. Poking fun at a trend can work as long as it’s not mean-spirited.
💡✍ It’s important for small businesses to have a social media presence, but it can sometimes feel like staring into an abyss. Jumping on the latest trend may not provide the elusive viral reaction you’re looking for, but it can increase engagement among your followers and give your business a little boost.
