We Stand Together
We remember the lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others, and we share in the outrage and calls to take action. There is no place in society for racism, injustice, hate or violence. The pain and suffering that racism and prejudice have caused the Black community have gone on for far too long.
At Hiscox, we Encourage Courage. We encourage courage in ourselves, our partners and our customers. We must all take the time to learn more and to understand the experiences of others, and we must have the courage to speak up, take action and champion social change.
Hiscox USA is committed to the following actions to ensure a diverse and inclusive workforce and commit our voice to promoting social and racial equality and justice:
- Provide a diverse, inclusive and safe environment: Building upon our unconscious bias training, we conducted a survey earlier this year to explore our employees’ perspectives regarding diversity and inclusion at Hiscox. The findings will be used to inform future initiatives, which include identifying and removing any barriers that prevent Black employees from achieving success. To foster a diverse workforce, we will continue to focus our recruitment efforts at historically Black colleges and universities and utilize diverse job interview panels.
- Promote education, awareness and understanding among our employees: To facilitate an inclusive work environment, we will continue to support our employee networks and celebrate employees from diverse backgrounds. This will include the creation of educational materials and events for all employees to learn more and have conversations about social and racial injustice, with a specific emphasis on injustices perpetuated against the Black community.
- Ensure visibility, engagement and acknowledgement: Hiscox Foundation USA is donating $100,000 each to the Equal Justice Initiative, which is committed to ending mass incarceration and challenging racial and economic injustice, and the National CARES Mentoring Movement, which is transforming the lives of impoverished Black children by recruiting Black men and women to mentor them. We are also encouraging employees to donate to appropriate causes and take advantage of the Hiscox Foundation USA’s ‘double match’ program for these donations. Additionally, we will be releasing a formalized Code of Conduct for external parties on our engagement expectations, and we will ask suppliers to provide details on their approach to and stance on Diversity and Inclusion at their respective organizations.
These are just some of the steps we are taking to create a better world and we must continue to do more. Our voices are critical, now more than ever, and we must band together to ensure our society guarantees everyone’s basic human rights.
We stand with the Black community in the fight for racial equality and justice, and we look forward to helping to bring about the social change that needs to happen.
