Hiscox customer supporting maritime women featured on ABC

Did you know that women make up only 2% of the maritime industry? This lack of female representation is what spurred Ally Cedeno to create WomenOffshore.org. The company’s goal is to change the industry with their online resource center that offers support and mentorship to women working on oil rigs, ships and platforms all over the world. The business was recently featured by ABC Localish on their series, Secretly Awesome, which spotlights amazing small businesses.

“If I tried to go tell another girlfriend about some of the struggles I maybe had trying to load out an oil tanker by myself, they wouldn’t get it,” Sheila Lafleur said about being a woman in a predominantly male industry. “But if I can go speak to these women, they get it. We speak each other’s languages and we can share in each other’s victories.”

As Cedeno describes, one of the things that help keep Women Offshore afloat is insurance, “I found Hiscox through a Google search. They had good reviews and it was affordable … You just never know what’s going to happen, and having that in your back pocket can give you peace of mind that you can continue on in this unknown world as an entrepreneur and not have to worry.”
