Coronavirus (COVID-19) help and support
We hope you, your family, and your loved ones are all staying healthy during these unprecedented times.
We are closely monitoring the developing coronavirus (COVID-19) situation across all of our operating regions. As this situation continues to evolve, so does our response. Providing support to our customers while safeguarding the wellbeing of our employees and partners is our priority. To protect against the spread of coronavirus, we have implemented some revised ways of working, which includes the transition to remote working. Our team remains ready to service your business via the usual methods of phone and email.
We recognize these are unsettling times and that you may have questions about your coverage. We are working closely with our partners, agents and policyholders to answer any questions about coverage, recognizing that coverage is looked at on a case-by-case basis and is based on the facts, circumstances, law and policy language of each. The core policies we offer are general liability, professional liability and a Business Owners Policy (BOP).
- General liability and professional liability are unlikely to be relevant to the COVID-19 situation because they cover claims by others, made against you in connection to your business services, damage you cause to someone else’s property or bodily injury caused by you. If your employees are working remotely during this time, their professional activities are typically covered under your professional liability policy, subject to other policy terms and conditions.
- The most common question we’re asked is around business interruption coverage for a BOP policy. While BOP does contemplate business interruption coverage, this coverage is only triggered when there is direct physical loss, meaning real physical property damage, by a covered cause of loss. BOP coverage has an exclusion for any such loss caused by “any virus, bacterium or other micro-organism that induces or is capable of inducing physical distress, illness or disease.”
We understand you may have additional questions. If you purchased a policy through an agent, please contact him or her. If you purchased a policy directly from us, we are available to answer any additional questions. As you can imagine, we are experiencing higher than normal call volumes, and call wait times are longer than usual. If you need to make a claim, you can contact us as you normally would.
Additionally, state insurance authorities, like the New York Department of Financial Services, also provide general information on business interruption insurance and COVID-19.
We remain committed to delivering the best possible service we can to our customers, brokers and partners.
Stay healthy and stay safe.
