Small business ideas for veterans

November 19, 2014

With Veterans Day being observed last week, we’re providing veterans with ways to explore different career options once they get settled back at home.

Starting a small business can be a great way for veterans to exercise the skills they learned during their time in service. But, it can be difficult to come up with small business ideas that are both fulfilling and successful. Here are a few ideas for veterans looking to start their own small businesses.

  • Survival Training. What better way to put your survival skills to use than to teach classes on how to rough it in the wild? Classes can be offered to adults or children, teaching the proper ways to navigate in the wilderness as well as first aid and rescue techniques. Creating a website where participants can sign up and using social media to spread the word can be a good way to reach a broader audience.
  • Information Technology. Working in an IT role in the military can provide people with numerous skills that transfer to civilian life. Opening up an IT consultancy business can be a low-cost business startup and you can forgo a typical office space in favor of making client office calls.
  • Security. Offering security services for large special events, like concerts and sporting games, can be a great way to break into the small business world. Startup costs can be kept down by operating from your own home and hiring off-duty police officers on an as needed basis.
  • Maintenance and Repair Shop. Military mechanics can have successful careers back home by opening repair shops. Whether you choose to focus on cars, construction equipment, or even home maintenance machines, specialized repair skills can be lucrative, especially if the equipment you choose is rare.

Adjusting to life back home can be strange at first, especially if you don’t know where to begin in order to start a career. Starting a small business can be a great way to become acclimated at your own pace, and put the skills you learned to good use. Just be sure to make smart decisions regarding your business assets and protection, and to choose an industry you enjoy.

Tell us! Are you, or are you looking to start your own small business? What types of industries are you hoping to branch out in as a military veteran?
