Starting a small business is a risky venture. It takes resource, time and energy to nurture your startup into a viable and profitable venture. It’s not a nine-to-five job. You live and breath your startup and it’s on your mind both day and night. Everywhere you turn you’re looking for ideas on how to improve your business and planning your next steps. That’s why it’s important to follow your passion.
When I look back on the path that led me to Hiscox, there’s a common theme that’s always been there – it’s entrepreneurship. One of my most vivid memories from high school was my entrepreneurship class. At that time music was a big part of my life, especially playing guitar. I remember creating a business plan for a guitar shop for my final project. I modeled it after the local music shop, but added features to cater to the specific needs of guitarists.
Following my entrepreneurship class, I launched Ball of Fire Ska Zine with two of my high school friends. We focused on a small niche within the music industry and created content by interviewing bands at concerts, reviewing CDs and keeping up on industry trends. We worked with small record labels to advertise in our magazine which was distributed for free at local concerts. It was a ton of work and we were never able to sell enough advertisements to fully cover our publishing costs, but our passion for music pushed us to carry on.
The one trait small business owners seem to have in common is that they’re passionate about what they do. It’s that passion that drives them towards success and helps them overcome the daily obstacles they face as small business owners. When your business and your passion align great things happen. No longer is work ‘just a job’ and instead of the days dragging on, you find there’s never enough time in the day. Passion fuels the entrepreneurial fire and pushes you to greater heights. It’s passion that pushes the entrepreneur to success.
