A New Hiscox Art Project
23 September – 12 November 2005 Double Take is the latest contemporary exhibition to be held at Hiscox Art Projects, an unusual exhibition space situated in the London office of Europe’s leading fine art insurer. The exhibition brings together work by four recent graduates from The Royal College of Art and will officially open on the 23rd September 2005.
A shared motivation rather than a unifying aesthetic ties these artists together, each taking commonplace objects and scenarios to rework them. All the works in their own way challenge one’s perception, demanding the viewer to reconsider that which is familiar and often overlooked. Humorous, dreamlike or enhancing the formal qualities of common objects, the works in this exhibition call upon our attention through the manipulation of our domestic surroundings: spaces, materials and situations are animated, and propose to look afresh at our environment and to re-imagine it.
In the clay sculptures of Jessie Flood-Paddock, objects acquire a different dimension and texture. Reworked with a seemingly careless ease, they become sculptures that fall between the figurative and the abstract. In Oona Culley's installations, objects that no longer have a function are restored from memories, encouraging the viewer to look beyond the purely material to allow for the invisible or the illusionary. 'Videoer' Russell Weekes presents playful retakes of everyday occurrences. In his films, animated objects wake up from boredom with an absurd life that moves them out of the ordinary as if possessed by a cheeky alter ego. Tatiana Echeverri Fernández's installations and collages make use of existing printed images and objects' leftovers to create intriguing sculptures and bi-dimensional works with a modernist and geometric touch.
